i know because a few years ago, i was you.

The one who'd wake up every morning with dread already sitting in her stomach before her feet hit the floor. The one who'd silently curse the driver who cut her off.

I had become an expert at finding fault. Scanning for problems. Bonding over complaints. If I could spot what was wrong first, I figured I couldn't be caught off guard by disappointment.

What I didn't see was how much it was costing me.

My mind never stopped. I'd replay conversations that were already over. Lie awake trying to solve problems that didn't exist. Someone would say something innocent and I'd spend hours trying to decode what they really meant.

Everything outside of me had the power to derail my entire day. I wasn't falling apart. I could show up, laugh, hold it together. But I wasn't happy either.

i existed in the grey middle - functional, coping, getting through - but nothing felt beautiful.

nothing felt like enough.

but my story didn't start there.

At 14, I learned that "no" isn't always enough. By the time I was a young woman, I had scars running across my skin - evidence of pain I didn't know how to speak.

I became a single mother at 19 after watching Federal Police storm into my home and arrest the man I thought was my future.

I carried shame, self-destruction, and trauma that had convinced me joy was for other people. Not me.

So of course I built walls. Of course I armoured up.
It made complete sense.

What I didn't realise was that those walls weren't protecting me anymore. They were keeping out the very things I was desperate for - joy, connection, the feeling that my life actually meant something.

I thought I was protecting myself.
